Lithuanian and Japanese contemporary textile art exhibition “Between Two / Contemplations” - Kauno Bienalė

Lithuanian and Japanese contemporary textile art exhibition “Between Two / Contemplations”

2022-04-14

The exhibition “Between Two / Contemplations” presents the textile works of already distinguished as well as some newly emerging Lithuanian and Japanese artists. With the works on display, the artists seem to create a lively intercultural dialogue (“Between Two”), combining two planes – matter and the beginning of life, fabric and human subjectivity. Herein two fundamental textile arts likewise two different but at the same time related cultures will come together.

The works of the artists will reflect the philosophy of textile while embracing the surfaces around us, thereby presenting multiple conceptual and poetic metaphors. For the manifestation of this specific philosophy, it is important to master the subtle craftsmanship and the in-depth cognition of fabrics themselves. The two meanings of contemplation in Japanese chinshi mokkō 沈思 黙 考 (silent thinking) and 観 照 kanshō (experience through the eyes) together with the Lithuanian version į(si)žiūrėjimas ((close) observation) form the main motif of this exhibition – insight and experience through the eyes.
