Contemporary Canadian Art: online event with curator Josée Drouin-Brisebois

J. Drouin-Brisebois will present the work of seven contemporary Canadian artists participating at the 13th Kaunas Biennial exhibition (12 November 2021 – 20 February 2022) in Kaunas, Lithuania. Kaunas Biennial is the largest international contemporary art exhibition in the Baltic region. Each edition of the Biennial is attended by over 50,000 visitors, which include high-profile international curators and experts, museum and gallery directors, art collectors and journalists. The 13th Kaunas Biennial will become a signature event, opening the “European Capital of Culture – Kaunas 2022” programme.

J. Drouin-Brisebois was appointed to curate the 13th edition of the event and for the first time the Biennial will include the largest number of Canadian artists, including David Altmejd, Shary Boyle, Isuma, Kapwani Kiwanga, Janet Cardiff and Georges Bures Miller, Jeremy Shaw and Althea Thauberger. J. Drouin-Brisebois will present an overview of the work by these prominent Canadian artists and will offer an exclusive insight into the upcoming 13th Kaunas Biennial.

In celebration of Francophonie Month, the event will take place in French with English and Lithuanian simultaneous interpretation.

Josée Drouin-Brisebois is the Senior Curator of Contemporary Art responsible for the collections of Canadian and international Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada. She has been highly involved with the Canadian participation at the Venice Biennale for the last decade. She was curator of the Steven Shearer (2011) and Shary Boyle (2013) exhibitions and also served as project director for Geoffrey Farmer’s 2017 participation, and was the lead curator of Isuma’s exhibition for the 2019 Biennale edition. She has curated numerous monographic and thematic exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto (MOCA) and The Rooms in Newfoundland and Labrador. From 2016 to 2020 she was the Jury Chair for the Sobey Art Award, the pre-eminent prize for contemporary Canadian art. In addition to publishing catalogues for the National Gallery and the Venice Biennale, her writing on contemporary art has appeared in a variety of publications and periodicals in Canada and abroad.
