Arnold Holzknecht

Italy

Arnold Holzknecht (*1960, Bressanone) lives and works in Ortisei, South Tyrol. Drawing on local traditions, he has developed a sophisticated woodcarving technique, creating poetic compositions through subtle yet refined variations in form. His expressive power stems from a stylistic originality that sets him apart on the international art scene.

Holzknecht possesses the rare ability to “bring order to history.” The optical excesses of American minimalism—grandiose and at times brutal—find a renewed sense of harmony in his work. Similarly, the improvisational gestures of European painting emerge naturally in his own expressive language.

While his work reflects the intersection of diverse cultural influences, Holzknecht’s artistic practice is marked by a distinct and individual strength. The result is a body of work that appears increasingly powerful and balanced over time—resonating with viewers and gaining depth with each encounter.
