Fog Nets, 2021

Commissioned for the Kaunas Biennial, 2021

Giedrė Kriaučionytė and Rasma Noreikytė were invited by Laura Lima to reflect on the following question: “If you were to walk in the forest to observe birds and had to obscure yourselves, what would be the ‘weaving’ of choice to construct your camouflage?” Noreikytė’s work Altogether, created using the sprang technique. For the artist it evokes how “the variation of colours, shapes and scents are constantly shifting. As I watch quietly, Nature changes the rules of the games through space and time with little to no effort and motion.” Kriaučionytė’s installation Fog Nets is inspired by the sensation one experiences in the morning when observing birds in a forest. Fog nets are also a tool used to harvest water from a fog especially in dry regions. The artists remind us that bird watching is slow, silent, calm, full of concentration and patience, just like many textile techniques.
