Tamu Nkiwane

Tamu Nkiwane (London, England, 1990) is a London-based artist whose work considers resonances from the past through examining the surrounding environment and gathering and reassembling particular materials and objects. A mode of autobiographical research underpins his work, be that a focus on the detritus of urban streets of London or, more recently, the more unfamiliar surroundings of Zimbabwe. Commerce and trade are features which allow Nkiwane’s work to explore historical amnesia and socio-political positions of an individual or a collective demographic in a competitive system. Working in the context of the found, each inquiry is a phase of a larger conceptual idea which explores the gap between the material and the spiritual based on visual and non-visual symbols and systems.
Recent solo exhibitions include Zabludowicz Collection London and National Gallery of Zimbabwe Harare. Selected performances and group exhibitions include ICA London, White Crypt Gallery London, Petites Serres Paris, Café OTO London. Nkiwane holds an MA in Painting from Royal College of Art in London and is the recipient of the following awards: Villiers David Travel Award, Artagon III award and Leverhulme Scholarship and Lucy Halford Bursary Fund for Royal College of Art.
