Migrating Species – Reflections on Moving, 2019

Migrating Species – Reflections on Moving is a project conceived by the Croatian artist Ana Kovačić and completed during her MagiC Carpets residency in Kaunas. The project is a three-part installation which connects distinct sites in the city of Kaunas: the waiting room in the Kaunas bus station, the Zoological Museum and Obelynė Park. The project was inspired by Tadas Ivanauskas, a famous Lithuanian zoology professor, and the three locations are connected by the theme of migrating birds. It explores the migratory identity and behaviour of birds and humans.

The first part of the installation Migrating Species – Reflections on Moving (Change) is installed in Kaunas bus station. Material for video work kindly lent by Remigijus Vabuolas (Žuvintas Biosphere Nature Reserve), Prof. Tomas Stanikas, Kaunas District Museum and the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum.

The second part Migrating Species – Reflections on Moving (Cycle) is installed in T. Ivanauskas Zoology Museum. The paintings are inspired by the works of Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, who accompanied Prof. Ivanauskas on his expeditions and painted by Samanta Augutė, Jūratė Grickevičiūtė and Karolina Latvytė Bibiano.

The third part Migrating Species – Reflections on Moving (Rest) is installed in Obelynė Park. The site-specific installation was realised in collaboration with Eimantas Dambrauskas and Mindaugas Jurkus.
