Ana Kovačić

Ana Kovačić, Nuotrauka: G. Žaltauskaitė

Ana Kovačić (b.1986, Zagreb, Croatia) is a multimedia artist based in Zagreb, Croatia. She is a graduate of MA Sculpture and New Media programmes at the Fine Arts Academy in Zagreb. In her work she explores the link between personal and social memory and the way this memory is inscribed into our bodies and into the spaces we live in. The economic and political transformations, stories of people migrating in search of employment, the gap between here and there, past and present are recurring themes in her works. Each subject, no matter whether it’s an abandoned village, a street crossing, a winery or her family’s flat, becomes witness to change in its many facets. The artist uses intimate stories in her works to portray bigger themes in a wider context: nostalgia, belonging, identification and insecurity.

In 2016 she was a resident at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, Germany where she also held a solo exhibition Where is homein 2017. She has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions since 2009. Her exhibitions are multimedia and site-specific installations containing the results of the process of historical and social explorations, and collections of personal stories. The works balance between documentary and fiction, they flow into each other, and each has elements of the other. The imaginary elements of her installations remind the viewers that nothing should be taken for granted. This is her main aim – to question the uncertainty of life and the forces of change that act upon us.

In 2015 Ana won a prize on Vizura Aperta festival, Momjan, Croatia. In 2017 she was nominated for Radoslav Putar award for young artists. In 2016 was nominated for award for contemporary art T-HTaward@msu.hr and in 2013 for ESSL art award. Her works are in the collection of Erste&Steiermärkische bank.

Since 2014 she is a member of Croatian Freelance Artists Association.
