A ∩ B ∩ C (Line), 2013
Installation with Perspex shapes and occasional performance
Dimensions variable
Coll. Fundação de Serralves – Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Porto, Portugal. Acquisition 2013

In the branch of mathematics known as set theory, the term A B ∩C denotes the area where three groups overlap. In this installation with occasional performances, the four participants choose one of a multitude of colorful shapes and position themselves into configurations thatcause them to overlap. This process is repeated and each performance produces a new set of ten geometric compositions while simultaneouslyrearranging the complete set of shapes. Pica’s interest in set theory stems from the fact that it was banned from the school curriculum in Argentina during the oppressive dictatorship of the 1970s: presumably, the use of overlapping shapes was seen as a symbol for collective action and solidarity. A B C (Line) playfullyre-engages with thissocialpotential for geometric abstractionby creating a moment of togetherness between the performers themselves as well as between the performers and the audience.
