Tatzu Nishi

Tatzu Nishi (b. 1960, Japan) creates large-scale public space installations that transform familiar public items, such as a monument or a streetlight, by placing them into private spaces. Although his works are intended for a general public that has no particular interest in art, they are not meant to please crowds and often cause controversy and huge opposition. Nishi’s aim is not only to make people stop in front of the artwork during their shopping or on the way home, but also to change them from passive into engaged spectators, by turning the familiar into the strange, public into private, and vice versa.
